Our Founding Directors

 

After working together at Hays Montrose and Rullion, in 2008, Lewis, Frank and James thought, “…we can do this on our own…” With the country in recession, our timing was challenging, but we walked the streets of London and won work. From humble beginnings in a small office in Shoreham-by-Sea, by 2011 we had employed 5 staff and were paying 500 operatives each week. 

As Founders, we have not forgotten the stresses and challenges of the early years, when we all had very young families and staff depending on us – we remember working crazy long hours, visiting huge numbers of building sites, servicing clients’ requirements to the best of our ability and respecting the operatives working on site – these are all values we instil in our staff today.

We used our combined knowledge, experience and sheer determination to succeed, and now the Shore Group employs over 100 staff in 7 locations, pays 2500 operatives each week and we have a group turnover in excess of £172M. In 2018, we registered 14,652 new temporary staff and processed 84,941 timesheets throughout the year.  

We place people into temporary and permanent positions all over the country, working with clients on prestigious developments such as renovations at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Mandarin Oriental, the Amex Stadium, Kings Cross Station, Terminal 2 at Dubai International Airport and ITV MediaCityUK. 

We have built a successful brand, and a reputation for being able to provide everything a project needs in terms of staffing. We are now servicing other industries including retail, telecoms, mechanical and electrical, rail and aviation, interiors and fitouts, and projects requiring high levels of security clearance. 

We have ambitious plans to double the company by 2025, creating more opportunities for our current staff and able to offer more services to our clients. We plan to open new locations and expand into other market sectors, as well as producing innovative solutions for our clients and candidates.

Lewis Yorke-Johnson

“I was 18 when I started in recruitment – this has been a mad journey and I have not stopped learning – nothing surprises me now. I am now responsible for key clients, mostly within M&E, as well as the strategic development of the company. I also monitor the overall performance of the company, setting targets, developing budgets and working closely with the Board. 

An average day for me starts around 6am being woken by my young daughters, after an avalanche of filtering through emails I tend to leave the house by 7am, and most of the week work from either the London, or Hove office. In 5-years’ time I’d like to challenge myself in a new environment abroad and establish the Shore Group as an international recruitment business. 

Outside of work I’m a bit of a recluse. I enjoy walking the dog, and spending time with close friends and family. I’m a big sports fan and love watching successful teams. I enjoy the occasional game of golf, play football once a week with the guys from work, and love to ski.”

 James Hobden

“I started my career in recruitment 1999 after returning from travelling around Europe for 6 months – I was desperate for cash, worked hard and I was able to pay my debts and buy a house within 12 months. My passion for recruitment was born, and I have not looked back.  I now work closely with a number of our key clients to ensure that we are servicing their requirements, however challenging in today’s markets. 

I now take overall responsibility for Compliance and H&S and oversee other ventures projects in which The Shore Group take a financial interest. Since 2008, I have learned a huge amount about how to run a business and focus on making sure that the company is protected from risks – I have gained a huge understanding of insurances, finances and funding. 

Time out of the business is precious, and I spend the majority with my wife, son and daughter. I try to run every day, or use the rowing machine, as it keeps me fit and helps me focus. Otherwise, I am distracted by in skiing, dining out, cars, motorsport and international rugby, and try to follow Brighton & Hove Albion.”

Frank Ashbee

“Since 1999, I must have walked thousands of miles around London visiting sites and projects to secure work. Now, I enjoy training staff how to succeed in recruitment and am more office based in our locations across the country. I spend a lot of time with clients, developing relationships and securing PSL agreements across the business, and listening to their views on our industry. 

I look forward to our Board Meetings, when I can challenge and be challenged by our Board – I enjoy working with talented and dedicated individuals, supporting the company’s growth and identifying opportunities. I also relish watching our staff succeed, particularly the large number of apprentices who have completed their apprenticeships and now work for us full time. 

When I’m not working, I can often be found in my garden, cultivating and growing a variety of vegetables and plants. I relax by learning to play the violin, and by watching my children ride Horses. I also enjoy watching rugby, Skiing red runs and am very partial to a fruity cocktail or 2.”
