The Challenge
Following heavy rainfall, water was pooling across the parking bays at Wycombe Retail Park. The existing permeable paving system was no longer coping with the demands placed on it, this presented a clear need to upgrade the car park's drainage infrastructure.
The Shore Group was appointed to deliver the civils and groundworks package, replacing the outdated system and upgrading the underlying construction.
The Works
The project involved excavating to formation, 480mm below the existing road construction, before installing a specified membrane across the base
The new drainage infrastructure included manholes, catch pits and diffusers, with the system designed to filter water through the stone and channel it away from the car park surface.
The drainage network was also connected into the main storm drainage system, providing a defined route for surface water.
The wider works included new block paving and speed bumps, completing the car park upgrade.
Phased Delivery in a Live Retail Environment
A key consideration was maintaining access to Wycombe Retail Park throughout the works.
The project was delivered across four phases over a 14-week programme, allowing construction activities to be sequenced while the car park remained open and retail operations continued.
This approach required careful planning and coordination to deliver the works within a busy operational environment.
